Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of packed light brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of fine sea salt. Add 1/4 cup of cold butter cut into cubes. Using your fingers or a fork, mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together 1 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of almond flour, 2 teaspoons of double-acting baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of fine sea salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 6 tablespoons of melted butter, 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup of whole milk, 1/4 cup of sour cream, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of optional orange extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are perfectly fine.
  5. Fold in 1 cup of coarsely chopped dark chocolate chunks or chips and the finely grated orange zest.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line the muffin tin with parchment liners and fill each cup about three-quarters full with the batter. Sprinkle the prepared streusel topping generously over each muffin.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. The tops should be golden brown and slightly domed.
  8. Once baked, remove the muffins from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. Then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely. Enjoy your delicious Chocolate Orange Streusel Muffins warm or at room temperature!

Notes

  • Use fresh orange zest for the best flavor.
  • Spoon flour into the measuring cup and level it off for accuracy.
  • Let ingredients come to room temperature for a smooth batter.
