Ingredients

For the Dough:
  • 1 Tbsp. yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2-4 cups flour All-purpose flour
  • Butter Melted, for brushing
  • Kosher salt For sprinkling
  • Garlic powder For flavor enhancement

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Baking sheet
  • Kitchen Towel
  • Pastry brush

Method

Instructions:
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Once the yeast is frothy, add the salt and gradually incorporate the flour, one cup at a time. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to combine until a dough begins to form.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour as necessary, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into equal pieces, about 12-16, and roll each piece into a long rope shape. Place them on a greased baking sheet, spaced apart.
  6. Cover the shaped breadsticks with the kitchen towel and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  7. While the breadsticks are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Once the breadsticks have risen, melt some butter and brush it over the tops. Sprinkle with kosher salt and garlic powder for added flavor.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. Remove the breadsticks from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Ensure your water is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm environment for best results.
  • Don’t skip the second rise; it enhances the texture and flavor.
  • Experiment with toppings like cheese or herbs for variety.
