Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup milk any percentage
  • 3/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese good quality
  • 1 pinch cayenne
  • to taste salt
  • to taste pepper

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Be careful not to let it brown; you just want it to melt completely.
  2. Once the butter is melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to whisk until thickened, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to low and add the shredded Cheddar cheese. Stir until melted and smooth.
  5. Add a pinch of cayenne, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Your Easy Homemade Cheese Sauce is ready! Drizzle over dishes or use as a dip.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, mix in different cheeses like Gouda or Monterey Jack.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • If the sauce thickens too much, whisk in a little more milk to reach desired consistency.
