Ingredients

For the Tortillas:
  • 3 cups white whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
  • 6 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 cup hot water

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Tortilla press (optional)
  • Non-stick skillet
  • Kitchen Towel

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Combine the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the white whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Step 2: Add the oil. Pour in the canola oil and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Step 3: Incorporate the water. Gradually add the hot water and stir until a dough begins to form.
  4. Step 4: Knead the dough. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 1-2 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Step 5: Let the dough rest. Cover with a damp towel and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Step 6: Divide the dough. After resting, divide the dough into 10-12 equal portions and roll each into a ball.
  7. Step 7: Roll out the tortillas. Flatten each dough ball and roll it out into a thin circle, about 8-10 inches in diameter.
  8. Step 8: Cook the tortillas. Preheat a non-stick skillet and cook each tortilla for about 30-60 seconds on each side until browned.

Notes

  • To keep tortillas warm, stack them and cover with a kitchen towel.
  • For added flavor, use vegetable broth instead of water.
  • You can freeze the tortillas for longer storage, just ensure they are well-wrapped.
