Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups warm water around 110°F (43°C)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup Butter Flavor Crisco
  • 1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 7 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting and kneading
  • Butter for brushing

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden Spoon or Dough Scraper
  • Kitchen Towel
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, honey, and yeast. Allow this mixture to sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. Once the yeast is frothy, add in the Butter Flavor Crisco and salt. Mix together until the Crisco is mostly melted and incorporated.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or a dough scraper after each addition. Continue adding flour until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Once the dough is combined, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into equal pieces (about 12-15). Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased baking sheet.
  7. Cover the shaped rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for about 30 minutes, or until they puff up.
  8. While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the rolls have risen, bake them for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. As soon as you take the rolls out of the oven, brush the tops with melted butter for an extra touch of flavor and shine.

Notes

  • Ensure your water temperature is just right to activate the yeast.
  • For fluffier rolls, don't skip the first rise.
  • You can freeze leftover rolls for up to 3 months.
