Ingredients

  • 1 cup lukewarm water (around 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • 3-4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter (for brushing)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Kitchen Towel
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm water and granulated sugar. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then sprinkle the instant yeast over the top. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour and salt.
  3. Once the yeast mixture is foamy, add it to the flour mixture along with the softened butter and egg. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a kitchen towel. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
  7. Cover the shaped rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes until they puff up slightly.
  8. While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Once the rolls have risen, brush the tops with melted butter for a golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  10. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a healthier twist, substitute part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
  • Use honey or maple syrup instead of granulated sugar for a different flavor.
  • For dairy-free rolls, replace butter with olive oil.
